Immunizations Q & A

Are immunizations safe?

Immunizations are the most effective way to prevent unnecessary illnesses in your child. Dr. Mawri recommends early immunizations to protect infants and young children who are still developing their immune systems.

If you have any concerns about the safety or effectiveness of immunizations, contact our office discuss and we’ll be happy to schedule an appointment. It’s important your child receives the proper vaccinations not only for their health and the health of the community, but also for their enrollment in school and other organized activities.

What immunizations does my child need?

Dr. Mawri follows the recommended immunization schedule provided by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) for children from birth to young adulthood. Depending on your child’s health history and age, Dr. Mawri can administer the proper dosages for each of the necessary vaccines to protect them from:

  • Polio
  • Mumps
  • Measles
  • Rubella
  • Tetanus
  • Chickenpox
  • Hepatitis A and B
  • Pneumococcal pneumonia
  • Diptheria

Some immunizations require more than one dose to be effective. Dr. Mawri usually schedules immunization appointments during well-child visits.

When does my child need immunizations?

The schedule for immunizations suggests the initial hepatitis B vaccine be given soon after birth. Dr. Mawri then administers different immunizations when your child reaches different age milestones until age 5.

Your child may also need additional immunizations if you plan to travel outside of the United States to certain countries where infectious disease is still a risk. For travel immunizations, be sure to schedule an appointment well in advance of your trip to ensure your child’s immune system has time to develop the necessary antibodies to fight off infection.

Dr. Mawri also recommends seasonal immunizations against flu and pneumonia, especially if your child has an existing medical condition that weakens their immune system.

What if my child can’t tolerate immunizations?

Some children can’t tolerate certain immunizations due to allergies or sensitivities to substances like eggs, milk, or other components of the injection. Dr. Mawri can assess your child’s specific risks for immunizations based on their health history and recommend alternative strategies to protect their health.
